Quarry stone, washed sand, gravel, ready mixed concrete and concrete blocks are all produced at our plants close to the site of the original and largest raw material base close to Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, which started in 1973. Our second quarry in Williamstown, Co Galway was founded in 1977 to supply Galway and the surrounding counties with quarry and concrete products. Our third site, in Ballycoolin, Co Cavan, extends our reach further to serve the midlands and border counties with the same range of quarry and concrete products. Concrete blocks are produced in eleven different profiles from a fully automated block plant within the division and an extensive range of ready-mixed concrete and washed aggregates are also available from all three sites.
On-going investment in equipment and facilities has been extremely important to this industry in order to guarantee that the highest quality products are produced in a safe and environmentally friendly fashion.
All of these products are used in a range of domestic and industrial building applications. Prestressed concrete products are designed so that load bearing capacity is maximised with a minimum floor weight and are suitable for use in most types of construction.
Products are manufactured to specification and rigorous quality control procedures ensure that consistent standards of quality are maintained.
Given the increasing demand generated from the construction sector over the years, a second plant was commissioned in 2000. The Group is now one of the market leaders in the Irish Cement market.
The plant utilises raw materials from the adjacent quarries and produces a range of high quality bulk and packaged cement products for the construction industry.
This first plant was commissioned in 1982. However due to market demand a new factory built on the existing site commenced production in 2001 and was subsequently expanded again in 2005.
One of the most successful products in the range is the Lakeland Slate Range – a thin profile, leading-edge tile that delivers the beauty and character of natural slate with the durability, precision manufacturing and cost effectiveness of concrete tiles.
Quinn Rooftiles is now a major supplier to the construction sector throughout Ireland.
Giving significant benefits in terms of heat insulation and handling costs over conventional concrete, the demand for thermal blocks has grown steadily in the market since the facility in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh went into production in 1995. This facility is the first of its kind in Ireland and now produces a full range of products that are sold throughout the UK and Ireland.
Quinn Lite blocks are much lighter than conventional concrete, have a faster drying out time and are easier to saw, chase and drill. They allow faster construction times and have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio along with a fire resistance equal to that of conventional concrete. Architects and builders alike are increasingly turning to Quinn Lite for their building needs.
Quinn Tarmac produces a full range of blacktop products. These include hot rolled asphalt, base course macadam, bitumen macadam road base, and wearing course macadam.
The product is laid by our own specialist teams working with the most modern plant currently available.
A large proportion of this product is used in the insulating of cavity walls, floors and roof insulation of commercial, industrial and domestic buildings. The Quinn Group purchased the Company in 1994 and in August 2001 Quinn Lite Pac commissioned a new 7000m production facility at the same location. The products are used for many applications other than thermal insulation. These include void formers for bridge decks, flotation units for marinas, packaging and lightweight fill for road construction.
These products are used in insulating cavity walls, floors and roofs for commercial, industrial and domestic markets and offer better insulation properties than other conventional materials.
Waste disposal facilities today are required to be precision planned and closely monitored. The Quinn facility is carefully lined with impermeable material and conforms to the highest environmental requirements.
Every stage of the procedure is given quality care and consideration by our specialist landfill technicians. This includes assessing the incoming materials and continuously monitoring the progress of the site.
All waste water is carefully collected and treated in special lagoons. Likewise, gases that accumulate through the natural decomposition process are picked up through a network of pipes and are recycled or burned off at high temperatures in a controlled environment.
The Group constructed a five mega-watt wind farm in 1995 on the Slieve Rushen Mountain, which nestles behind the core-manufacturing base of the Group at Derrylin.
This was further complemented in 2004 by the addition of a 13.5 mega-watt wind farm at Snugborough, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan. The combined 18.5 mega-watt output of these Windfarms is sufficient to support the electricity requirements of 11,000 homes.
Through a series of acquisitions and new developments, these businesses where combined and built up into the Quinn Plastics division of Quinn Group. Quinn Plastics offers a range of industrial and domestic products that are used mainly in the advertising, point of sale/point of purchase, sanitary ware and construction sectors. Applications of our products range from simple picture framing through to complex construction projects, such as sound barrier systems. As part of our commitment to the industry, Quinn Plastics has invested in new production facilities in Le Cresot, France and added to both production capacity and product range in Pribram, Czech Republic. In 2005, Quinn Plastics purchased a start up business known as Polyex in the UK. The addition of this manufacturing and storage facility allowed us to extend both our product range and service capability, to further support development of the UK market. Our distribution hubs are located close to our major markets, enabling fast delivery and high quality service.
All of our sheet materials are made under ISO quality standards, and are constantly developed to ensure the highest possible performance. Each production facility has a dedicated Quality Manager and team who ensure that production meets the required standards. We have invested significantly in the most modern production control methods to enable all relevant guarantees to be provided as standard. Our external grade products carry warranties on their weather durability, impact performance and life expectancy. We work with leading raw material suppliers to develop products with enhanced strength characteristics that make them suitable for specific application areas. We are proud of our commitment to the environment and are able to reuse over 95% of waste in the production process again. The remainder we recycle into commercial grade packaging material. Quinn Plastics plays a leading role in supplying sheet materials to major sanitary equipment manufacturers throughout Europe. Whether it is a simple glazed panel for a shower cabin, or the tub for a jacuzzi, Quinn Plastics has a product that is suitable. The Company also supplies major retail groups throughout Europe with sheet materials that are fabricated into point of sale units, lighting controllers, cash register guards, and newspaper vending towers.
This will be a major development for the Group in one of the most technically advanced industrial regions of the world. The project is currently in the design phase with a projected three-year construction plan. Methylmethacrylate (MMA) is an upstream, precursor raw material product used in a variety of applications including suspensions and emulsions used in paints and related applications. It is used in the production of transparent, extruded and cast sheet plastics for displays, sanitary ware and other building and construction applications as well as in plastic injection moulding products. Quinn Chemicals will also supply all of the MMA requirements of the Quinn Plastics division in the longer term.
The process being adopted by Quinn Chemicals utilises recently perfected Japanese technology that, in contrast to all European competitors, produces very low levels of environmentally harmful by-products. The adoption of this technology would be a first in Europe and is destined to have a major impact on the plastics sector generally.
A brand new 19,000 m2 State-Of-The-Art facility is undergoing final commissioning at Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan, Ireland, close to Quinn Group HQ. This new facility further compliments the existing facility located in Newbridge Co. Kildare, Ireland.
The investment and expansion of the Packaging Division Will provide an extension to the product offering to include both rigid and flexible packaging whilst broadening the Customer reach.
Utilising the latest technologies, the company is committed to providing innovative packaging solutions tailored to the individual needs of our customers whether the products made are in multi-layered Sheet Extrusion, multi-layered Film Extrusion, Thermoforming of Meat and Poultry Trays, Injection Moulded In-Mould- Labelling or the Extrusion of Plastic Strapping.
Quinn Packaging is also committed to minimising impact on the environment through the reprocessing of waste rather than landfilling.
The Derrylin plant went into production at the end of 1998 producing a full range of flint, green and amber containers, and is now well established as a supplier of quality products to the food and beverage industry throughout Ireland.
Ongoing refinements of continuous flow techniques mean
Quinn Glass can produce consistently high quality products quickly and efficiently. The mix of computerised processes and experienced skilled staff ensures perfect results time and time again.
Building on the success of the first facility, Quinn Glass has further consolidated its position in the market by investing in another production, beverage filling hall and warehousing facility at Elton, Cheshire in the UK. All of the facilities utilise the most up-to-date technology available within the industry with the lowest emissions levels of any similar facility in Europe. The beverage-filling hall in particular has proven extremely successful as brewers and distillers seek new ways to reduce costs across the supply chain.
This is a unique service within the sector in the UK The major investment in the Elton manufacturing plant not only represents the single biggest investment in the European glass industry for many years, but also increases manufacturing capability of Quinn Glass from 720 million containers every year to almost 2 billion. This confirms the Quinn commitment of offering a quality product and service unsurpassed in Europe.
A specialist design team use Computer Aided Design
(CAD) to work with customers to find the most innovative and effective solutions to their marketing needs. Glass is a designer’s delight, being infinitely malleable and versatile.
The shape, size, weight and features of a glass container are intrinsic to the branding of a product, making a distinctive statement at the point of sale.
This support and attention to customer needs continues throughout the production process, with the Operations Planning Team working to schedule and to optimise order runs. Substantial warehousing facilities allow Quinn Glass to control another link in the supply chain, thus ensuring improved customer satisfaction.
Decoration and pre-labelling of glass containers is now an important part of the production process, as producers seek greater efficiency and product designers look for enhanced brand differentiation.
Quinn Glass is involved in all current techniques including online Pressure Sensitive labelling (PS) and sleeving and will continue to encourage the development of new innovative processes.
The production facility at Leigh in the UK produces the ’round-top’ range whilst the production facility in Grobbendonk, Belgium, produces the ‘compact’ range. The division’s interest in the specification radiator market is represented through the Merriott brand based in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland.
At the start of 2007, a new radiator facility went into production in Newport, South Wales. This major investment will create the most modern and efficient radiator plant in the world.
At that time, Quinn Group had experienced a poor level of customer service and were disappointed with the general approach of their existing insurers. The Group felt that there was a significant opportunity in the Irish market for an insurer who was focused on customer service and had a deeper understanding of the businesses they insured.
Since 1996 the Company has gained a reputation for value and innovation and has experienced tremendous growth in the Irish market. In 2005 QUINN-direct became the third largest insurer in Ireland, with a particularly strong position in the motor and commercial liability sectors.
The Company provides a full suite of general insurance products including motor, home, liability and commercial property insurance. It employs over 1700 dedicated staff in Cavan, Enniskillen, Dublin and Manchester servicing direct customers and brokers in both Ireland and the UK. For motor and home insurance, the Company’s Internet site allows consumers to get a quotation and go on cover within a few minutes. The Company approach to commercial insurance is based on developing a partnership approach with policyholders and ensuring that they are fully involved in all aspects of any claim arising. Local representatives deal with all aspects of service to business customers. This unique approach has enabled QUINN-direct to become one of Ireland’s largest insurers of commercial liability risks. The Company’s UK commercial business has been operating since 2003 and is managed through our Salford Quays office in Manchester. Having established this presence and a network of regional representatives QUINN-direct is now well placed to expand commercial business in the UK market.
A significant portion of QUINN-direct’s commercial insurance is in the construction, allied trades and leisure sectors. The Quinn Group has over 30 years experience operating within these sectors and therefore understand the needs of business customers.
Having already established representative offices in Belgium and Netherlands, QUINN-direct further announced the establishment of a new European operations centre in Navan, Co. Meath in September, 2006 to meet the continued growth of its European business.
